Mahe, also known as Mayyazhi, is a small town in the Mahé district of the Pondicherry Union Territory. It is situated at the mouth of the Mahé River and is surrounded by the State of Kerala. The Kannur District surrounds Mahé on three sides and Kozhikode District from one side.Formerly part of French India, Mahé now forms a municipality in Mahé district, one of the four districts of the Union Territory of Puducherry. Mahé has one representative in the Puducherry Legislative Assembly.
The Hillock is an impressive Heritage Precinct spot. The wooded Hillock has been aesthetically designed with modern amenities while at the same time the natural beauty of the Hillock is not compromised.
Walkway, Mahe
Mahe River Side Walkway. This is just 500m from the St.Theresa's shrine. Mahe River Side Walkway is a well maintained place. This is where the Mahe river leading into Arabian sea. The walkway is quite clean and perfect place to kill time.
Azhimukham is the estuary of Mayyazhi River and Arabian Sea. This picturesque location of Mahe which flanked by blue wavy ocean and rippling Mayyazhi river. In otherwords Mayyazhi means Beautiful Estuary. The small and beautiful Tagore Park is situated here. Recently the Azhimukham location has been reconstructed with a walk way nearly 2kms long through the bank of river from the estuary towards Mahe Bridge. The Govt. House (Office of the Regional Administrator) is also located at the end point of Azhimukham.
Malayala Kalagramam is a renowned centre for arts and culture located in New Mahe close to Northern Kerala that offers art, music and dance training with a view to expanding cultural awareness and enriching participants’ daily lives.
Thazhe Angadi Heritage Street situated close to the harbour in Thalassery will take you to the colonial days and history of trade through Uru or Fat Boats.
The Kakkulangara mosque is situated at Valapattanam, 7 kms north of Kannur. It was built in typical Kerala architectural style but incorporated some Arabic elements too. Visit this mosque to admire its picturesque location, beautiful pond, ancient minaret, the dargah of a Muslim saint and its impressive traditional architecture. The mosque has one of the most ancient minarets in the state.
A best hangout place in Kannur, Thalassery Sea Bridge or Thalassery Kadalpalam was constructed in 1910.The pier at Thalassery, known locally as Kadalpalam, is an old structure extending into the Arabian Sea. The pier is a beautiful and serene picnic spot frequented by both locals and tourists alike.
